The 24-Hour Rule: Turning Rejection into Your Secret Weapon
We’ve all been there: you open an email, and it’s the dreaded rejection after weeks of interviews. Not only interviews but any news we do not deem as good. Your stomach drops, your blood boils, and you want to fire off a defensive reply. This ain’t right, I was robbed!
Don’t.
When you get hit with tough news, the best move you can make is a whole lot of nothing. Wait for 24 hours. Oh, I wish I have done this on many occasions. It would have saved me many a apology and sleepless nights.
Why the Pause Matters?
- Clarity replaces emotion: Sleep on it. Let the initial sting fade so logic can take the driver’s seat.
Maybe its a good thing, perhaps you just dogged a bullet or a terrible boss. - Process the data, ignore the noise: Strip away the feelings and look at the facts. What can you learn from this? When we don’t like the answers, ask a different question.
- Strategy over temper: A reactionary email can burn a bridge forever. A strategic, poised response can leave the door open for future opportunities. In short, don’t respond when angry.
The Shift: None of us like being rejected. But once the 24 hours are up, ask yourself: “Why is this actually a good thing?”
Maybe that company culture wasn’t fit. Maybe a better offer is right around the corner. Or maybe you just gained invaluable interview data for your next win.
Next time you get knocked back, pause, pivot, and move forward with a strategy, not with anger. If you’re exploring new opportunities or looking for career guidance in Japan’s healthcare and life sciences industry, Book a Discovery Session with us today.
