All Hat, No Cattle
I recently caught up with the Head of Market Access at a major European pharma player. He was frustrated.
He looked at his own organization and saw a gap where leadership should be. The company spent millions loudly espousing the value of their products, but when you dug into the substance? There was nothing there. As they say in Texas: all hat and no cattle.
The root cause was a classic corporate trap. Because it is a family-owned company, management was utterly obsessed with keeping everyone happy. They spent all their energy catering to every single opinion, terrified of rocking the boat. Harmony had become a metric. Strategy and clear direction had become secondary.
What this executive was starving for was basic communication with candor.
True leadership isn’t about maintaining fake, fragile peace. It’s about stating the cold, hard facts. It’s standing up and saying: “These are my thoughts, this is the current situation, and this is exactly how we are moving forward.”
Once you develop that clear, definitive strategy, you pull everyone’s eyes off each other and lock them onto the target. You swap artificial harmony for alignment.
The reality is simple: there is no team on earth happier than one in fierce pursuit of a common goal. Stop trying to please everyone. Define the mission, state the facts, and run toward the objective.
