The Safety Risk

Written on .

Staring up at the Storr Lookout Point over Golden Week, I had the thought when things get rocky; some General Managers instinctively play it safe. They freeze. It’s fear. Fear that they will make the wrong decision. They wait for a consensus that never comes, hoping the weather will clear if they just lie low. That is a trap. In leadership, the ultimate villain isn’t failure. It’s The Do-Nothing Strategy.

If you don’t take a side, you don’t actually have a brand. You have a commodity. You become part of the background noise, invisible to the market, and irrelevant to your team.

To stand out, you have to pick up a fight. You have to make a stand. The legendary advertising executive Bill Bernbach nailed it when he said:

“If you stand for something, you will always find some people for you and some against you. If you stand for nothing, you will not have anybody against you, and you won’t have anybody for you.”

People want to be led. They might not always agree with every single call you make, but they crave a leader who actually has a compass. Sure, do the groundwork. Get other people’s buy-in, listen to your team, and weigh the risks. But at the end of the day? The consensus-seeking has to stop, and the execution has to begin.

The buck stops with you. Pick your lane, commit to the turn, and drive right through the storm.
